What is Foundations?

Providing essential building blocks for your spiritual growth and development

Foundations seeks to promote personal spiritual growth and development through a variety of strategic classes and seminars. Our Winter 2008 Semester will begin February 20. See class description below.

What types of classes are offered?
We offer two categories of classes: Core and Electives. The Core includes those foundational courses that are central to the Christian faith.

The following classes represent the Core:
Overview of the Old Testament, Overview of the New Testament, Essential Beliefs I, Essential Beliefs II, Overview of Church History, Life of Christ
World Views

The Electives include a variety of special interest topics from the following categories:
Apologetics, Bible Books, Church in Culture, Evangelism, Leadership, Marriage, Parenting, SHAPE (Spiritual Gifts Class), Spiritual Disciplines, Stewardship, Worship

What type of classroom environment can I expect?
Most of our classes are small (20-25 people) and interactive in nature to encourage questions and discussion. Additionally, as you learn and grow, you'll meet other people and feel more "connected" to the Woodmen community.

Who are the teachers?
The faculty mainly consists of well-qualified Woodmen staff and members within our church. Occasionally, we'll invite someone from the community at large to teach. All individuals are gifted in the area of teaching and are excellent communicators! Our teachers welcome your questions and are accessible beyond the classroom. Their greatest desire is to help participants grown in their relationship with Christ!

When are classes offered?
Classes are typically 8-10 weeks in length and are primarily offered during the Fall Semester (October-December) and the Spring Semester (February-May) of each year. Our Winter 2008 semester begins February 20.

The following classes are available for the Winter 2008 Semester:

Science and Christianity:
From the Living Room to the Classroom to the Courtroom
In the U.S., the clash of “scientific” and “Christian” worldviews has occurred at various times and in various forms and venues. Today, the clash between “science” (represented by Darwinism) and “religion” (represented by Intelligent Design) has re-emerged in our living rooms, classrooms and our courtrooms What is the current status of this controversy? Is an accommodation possible?
In this class, we will focus on developing a working knowledge of competing worldviews. We will discuss the centrality of worldview to effective apologetics and employ an in-depth historical approach to understand the current status of the “Evolution vs. Intelligent Design” conflict in our classrooms and our courtrooms. Finally, we will address the challenge of the New Atheism.
The class will be taught by Dr. Gary Coulter. Gary has a B.A. in Biology and Anthropology, an M.A. in Parasitology and a PhD in Virology. A retired USAF Lt. Col., he taught in the Dept of Biology at USAFA, was a Professor of Microbiology and Civil Engineering at CSU and served as the NASA Program Manager for the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Program. Koinonia “Fellowship”
A Study in The First Epistle of John
The First Epistle of John focuses on the importance of our fellowship with God, Jesus Christ, and one another. This fellowship has both temporal and eternal blessings for all that participate in it. What are we to be like if we are in fellowship with God, Jesus Christ, and one another? This study will help us better understand these questions.
The class will focus on the original intent and occasion of the author as it pertained to the recipients and how it applies to us today. There will be a biographical sketch on the author, cultural and historical background, and a verse-by-verse exposition of the Epistle.
Although the class is lecture style, informal group interaction is highly encouraged and class discussion will occur either during the lecture or immediately following.
