Friends of Mstyora
Mstyora, a village nestled between three rivers in the far eastern portion of the Vladimir region, is home to numerous artists that produce some of the most sought after lacquer boxes in Russia. A silver jewelry factory also employs some of the Mstyora population. Predominantly agricultural, the remainder of the community seeks out a meager living. A majority of homes in the area do not have indoor plumbing and share common wells - hauling their water several blocks. The orphanage was established during the Nazi occupation of St. Petersburg during WWII. Hundreds of children were smuggled out of Moscow and St. Petersburg, some of whom were brought to Mstyora despite the thousands of miles of frozen land.
Today the orphanage, housing 90+ children from preschool through 15 years of age, is located a short walk from the center of town. Since 1995
Children's HopeChest has worked closely with the Mstyora orphanage.
In 1997 Woodmen Valley Chapel in Colorado Springs, joined the partnership and together we have been able to provide a media center, craft workshop, kitchen workshop, playground equipment, small gymnasium, and many much needed repairs. The children have also received musical instruments for their brass band and even a few guitars.Valuable relationships have developed as a result of this partnership. Rewards far more important than any workshop or physical improvement are the changes we can see in the hearts of the children.
