Reading Mentors Wanted!
Did you know that children have greater chances of success if they learn to read early? Access to affordable early childhood education is a strong indicator of social and academic preparedness for a successful elementary education experience. Up until third grade, a child learns to read; after third grade, the child reads to learn. Accordingly, good third grade reading skills are critical to future success.
Unfortunately, the recent Quality of Life Indicators Report coordinated by the Pikes Peak United Way identified two Colorado Springs school districts that have over 35% of their children not reading at the third grade reading level which means these children have a higher chance of being high school drop-outs as they grow older and school becomes harder for them.
What can we do about it? Woodmen Valley Chapel’s Community Impact: A.C.T.S. Ministry thinks we can make a difference!
We currently have enough Reading Mentors for each of the students that we work with. If you are interested in becoming a Reading Mentor, please check our website periodically as we will post our volunteer needs online.
